What a sad looking kid!
Can I just rail against the goodie bag? Why does my kid need to take home a sack full of plastic toys, nail polish, discount coupons for the video arcade, and candy candy + more candy (to be consumed in the car on the ride home as a layer on top of the cake and ice cream)? At the last party the “bag” was a purse! What next, a Vuitton goodie bag?
I am so glad that birthdays were a relatively simple affair when my girls were growing up…themes were unheard of and my favorites were held at the bowling alley or pool. I recently heard of a birthday party for seven year old girls was held at a spa where each of the kids received a facial and had their fingernails and toenails done. Each went girl went home with a bag full of “products”..could only imagine what some mothers would think of how they could top this one…..
What about the mom who refuses to bake a chocolate cake at her daughter’s
8th birthday, because chocolate = sugar and sugar = hyper-off-the-wall kids, and there were going to be 12 of them. So she bakes a carob cake, and each kid takes turns pushing their plate to the center of the table and says, “Hell, no, I’m not eating this!”
I have to confess, though, I planned parties for a living so when my daughter turned three, I made a big deal out of it. I hired a balloon man, a face painter and two “games professionals” to entertain the kids. I wanted her to feel loved and special on her special day. I felt silly as soon as she and her friends spent the whole time with one old batch of play dough and some finger paints.
